Why We Have a Wellness Policy

Schools that take part in the National School Lunch Program or other federal meal programs must have a Local School Wellness Policy. This rule comes from federal law and helps schools make sure students have healthy meals and learn good habits for lifelong wellness.

Wellness policies help:

  • Promote healthy eating and physical activity

  • Prevent and reduce childhood obesity

  • Make sure school meals meet federal nutrition standards

Background

Congress understands that schools play an important role in helping students stay healthy and active.
In 2004, a law called the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act required all schools that take part in federal meal programs to create a Local School Wellness Policy.

Later, in 2010, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act added new rules to make sure schools:

  • Set goals for nutrition, physical activity, and wellness

  • Follow nutrition guidelines that help students stay healthy

  • Allow parents, students, and staff to help create and update the policy

  • Share updates about the policy with the public

  • Check progress regularly and make results available for everyone to see
